Hi friends!
Who here has dark furniture from years past that
needs a little face lift?
Me, Me!
When my husband & I got married I bought a lot of it.
Did you buy into that craze too?
Through the years much of it got painted,
which is a really easy fix.
I recently resurrected a DARK settee from the basement,
I knew I wanted it a little different.
See it has a TWIN, you can check out that makeover HERE,
which has a more cottage feel.
How to make this settee different.....
My wheels began to turn.
After much thought,
I figured I would change it up and give it a
Restoration Hardware look.
This was very simple...
I took apart the seats with the woven material,
then recovered them with a $4 drop cloth.
The drop cloth gives a neutral texture that resembles
the look of RS.
Tip-never pass up a piece of furniture that can easily be recoverd,
it can be transformed into any look with very little effort.
With garage sale season underway,
I thought I would share:).
Now onto the finish....
Your wood will need to be somewhat porus.
Keep in mind this doesn't have to be perfect.
I took two colors,
a cream & a medium gray(Anne Sloans French Linen),
I watered them down to a milky consistency.
I took my brush and alternated (lightly)
adding each color to the frame.
This is washing technique.
As soon as I brushed it on I would wipe off excess with a cloth.
Then I sanded unevenly with a medium grit sandpaper.
You can also seal it with a wax.
What do you think????
I really love how it turned out, for $4, not too shabby:).
Remember to shop your house, your friends & family's houses too.
It is a great way to re-use & recycle.
And save you $$$$.
BTW, my blog is going to WP & switching to
a .com this week, yay!
Make sure you change me on your sidebar,
if you would like to still follow along(hope so:))

I am in love with this Jen...wonderful job with something you already owned. My favorite of course is the drop cloth! I have so many I've used over the years and love them as they show signs of paint jobs gone by...though I never once thought about using them to recover one of my pieces. I'm on my way to Home Depot this morning to get a fresh one for 4 chairs I'm working on ...THANK YOU for the great idea!
ReplyDeleteJen, fabulous job on the bench. Very impressive!
