Hi Everyone!
I hope you are all enjoying your week so far.
Ours has been a little busy getting ready for all the
Halloween festivities to come this weekend
but...it is all good stuff:)!
I have a little confession to make.
Although my husband is super NICE & very patient,
he doesn't deal well with change.
Can anyone relate?
He likes things just the way they are.
Which for a person obsessed with decorating,
that isn't good:).
Here is how that works....
1. I either warn him well in advance & many times over,
with added reasons as to why & how.
Does this sound familiar?????
OR
2. I just do it anyway.
Well, this project was a #2.
I did meet him half way by making sure
" my project" wasn't permanent.
OK, enough stalling, my latest project,
it is easy enough to just paint them right on the wall
&
YOU ARE RIGHT!
But....
when I tell you the look on my hubby's face when he saw
it for the first time, sheer PANIC.
(He doesn't get the whole "it's just paint" thing.)
When I then told him it was completely removeable he
lightened up, a lot
&
now....they are growing on him:).
So.... I am glad I took the extra time to
create the stripes with contact paper.
Now if I get tired on it.....
I just tear it down, easy!
Here are
the BEFORE shots
(you can see lots of change since these where taken)
The Afters
(my son Shane woke up that morning asking what does perseverance mean?)
What I did
I measured my wall.
I figured how many 9"(ht) stripes I would need
(I came up with 9" because the contact paper was 18")
I figured out my width & then added an extra 1" for error.
So I rolled out & cut 5-18" x 34" pieces of contact paper.
I taped the corners down.
Rolled on 3 coats- this takes time, be patient.
Let dry.
Cut them in half right up the middle.
Using a level make a faint pencil line on the wall,
every 18" from the bottom up, on the bottom only.
Peel & stick and line up with the bottom line,
this can be tricky, be patient.
Smooth out from center to edges.
Use exacto knife in corners to make a smooth line.
I learned the hard way to make them longer than you need:).
It is all a learning experience, right?
BTW,
this project is great if you are renting
or in a non-permament place.

Have a great week,

I think they sell stripes already made, not sure. Anyway, I love the idea that it is removable. As for the husband, mine is on a need to know, and there is no reason for him to know what I am planning.
ReplyDeleteHaha, and your stripes brighten your space so well!
ReplyDeleteHey Linda, thanks! I agree:)!
ReplyDeleteThis turned out gorgeous - and I could NEVER pull this off - contact paper and I do not get along lol - but I've painted stripes many times!
ReplyDeleteAnd your home is just beautiful :)
Hugs,
Suzan
First of all your house and the new stripes are gorgeous. Second, thank you for writing that little confession about your husband and how he reacts to changes. He sounds EXACTLY like mine. Glad I'm not alone. ;)

ReplyDeleteThis looks SO great! I'm not sure I could be patient enough for this project. Was it hard to smooth the contact paper out once it was painted?
ReplyDeleteWow! You are ambitious and it turned out absolutely beautiful. Your whole home is gorgeous, warm and welcoming. Thank you for sharing.

ReplyDeleteI love your strips. I was thinking of trying something like this to create birch trunks for Christmas. My only worry is does it leave a sticky residue when you remove it? Those strips look so great, I'd never take them down! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI too have grey and white stripes on my house, but I would've never thought to use contact paper! What a great idea - turned out super cute!

Gorgeous! The stripes are so fresh and bright! Love it.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! It's perfect if you're not sure you're going to like stripes. Much easier to peel them off than to have to pain over them. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteOk, I seriously can't believe these are contact paper! They look fabulous! I think they add just the right touch to the room. Great job, but of course I love everything that you do :)
ReplyDeleteBrilliant idea and looks fantastic . love it!

I covered an entire wall in lines of script that I cut from contact paper. Looking at your project was giving me flashbacks of what a nightmare it can be to level something that just wants to stick to everything!! People told me how crazy I was and how much patience I must have... girl you've got even more than me, you even painted it!!!
ReplyDeleteFantastic!!

I love stripes and these look so fabulous! What a great idea using contact paper. This reminded me how much I love stripes in a room... in our previous house I painted stripes in my daughter's nursery. :-)
ReplyDeleteHi! It looks wonderful! My question is: why did you paint the contact paper?
ReplyDeleteThe stripes look so pretty! I would never have guessed you used contact paper if I hadn't read it. I would end up wrapped in a ball of sticky paper ;) Paint I can handle. My husband is the opposite too. He would be fine if I changed the paint colour every week as long as I don't ask him to do the painting. He'd rather do dishes or laundry.
ReplyDeleteI am just discovering your blog. Awesome! I love the grey stripes. Reminds me of a modern day log cabin. I look forward to what you share in 2013!
